Home › Forums › Troubleshooting › Cannot Run Firmware v2.7.7
I had just loaded Firmware v2.7.7 and the load went well. After it finished,
I used my computer, which is wired to the pcWRT router, to open Google. It
seemed to hesitate but finally connect and presented the Google site. I
tested a few other links then did a speed test (testMy.net) and all seemed
normal. So I considered it a success.
Toward the evening, my wife told me that some links on her iPad 7 that she
had been looking at the day before were not loading. I took a look checking
the settings of the iPad but could not get them to load either. Two of them
were were tvguide.com and crazycompression.com. She also said some of her games
wouldn’t play either. I was also unable to perform an app update using the Apple
store. Later, when my granddaughter came home, she also said her WiFi was not
working.
I examined the WiFi settings and saw there were perhaps 8 other WiFi stations
being shown. I figured there must be a bunch of congestion so began changing
the pcWRT WiFi channel. None of them really worked much better that any other.
I bumped up the power from 30% to 60% and tried some of the channels again.
Most of the time, the iPad was with me and only 5 ft or so from the router.
I finally gave up and figured I would check in the morning when all the other
stations would probably be inactive.
The next morning, there were no stations other than mine so I figured things
would work better. Nope, still could not get tvguide.com or crazycompression.com
to come up on the iPad. I took it to where my computer was so it would get the
best signal possible and still it would not connect reliably. I had no problem
getting either on my computer so I knew they were up.
I restored my last configuration saved before installing firmware v2.7.7 and
the issue remained. I finally checked the “Check For Updates” button and saw
the “Restore Previous Firmware” (or whatever it said). So I did. Then I also
restored my last configuration and everything was working. The iPad had no
problem connecting to tvguide.come or crazycompression.com and all else seemed
to work well.
Well that is where I am at. I cannot install Firmware v2.7.7 because is does
not work, though I cannot figure out why. I had looked at the new System Log
button on 2.7.7 and captured two histories. One was after doing a Reboot. I
can zip them up and send them to some e-mail address, if you would like. So
I thought I would explain as good as I remembered and let you know that, for
me, Firmware v2.7.7 does not work.
This is the second user having issues with 2.7.7. I did not update yet. Can the company provide guidance on whether I should try the update now or wait for the company to release a patch?
I just posted my experiences with v2.7.7, it killed my VPN connection. Rolled back to v2.7.6 and all is working again.
V2.7.7 brought down speed to zero or near zero on both wired and wireless clients. Tinkering didnt work until I rolled back to v2.7.6. All well again.
@warrenholt @sayssar What are your hardware models?
I am using the pcWRT Newifi-D2 v2.7.6
Presently, that has the WAN port connected to a Verizon ActionTec MI424WR Router
Previously, the LAN ports were going to two Dell computers but recently (last month or two) I have changed things so one of the LAN ports is going to a NetGear GS108Ev3 switch which then connects to those same computers.
@WarrenHolt This update should not cause connectivity problems with specific devices or specific sites. For the Newifi-D2 model, the only thing that is changed is the port numbering. The port numbers were 1, 2, 3, 4 for v2.7.6 when you look at the back of the router, counting from left to right – this was contradictory to the port markings on the router box. For v2.7.7, the port numbers are 4, 3, 2, 1, consistent with the markings on the box.
That may be, but here is what I did this morning.
I went to https://speed.cloudflare.com/ and https://radar.weather.gov/?settings=v1_eyJhZ2VuZGEiOnsiaWQiOiJuYXRpb25hbCIsImNlbnRlciI6Wy04My4wMTIsNDMuNjldLCJsb2NhdGlvbiI6bnVsbCwiem9vbSI6NS4yNjYzNTAyMDM0NTI5NjYsImxheWVyIjoiYnJlZl9xY2QifSwiYW5pbWF0aW5nIjp0cnVlLCJiYXNlIjoic3RhbmRhcmQiLCJhcnRjYyI6ZmFsc2UsImNvdW50eSI6ZmFsc2UsImN3YSI6ZmFsc2UsInJmYyI6ZmFsc2UsInN0YXRlIjpmYWxzZSwibWVudSI6dHJ1ZSwic2hvcnRGdXNlZE9ubHkiOnRydWUsIm9wYWNpdHkiOnsiYWxlcnRzIjowLjgsImxvY2FsIjowLjYsImxvY2FsU3RhdGlvbnMiOjAuOCwibmF0aW9uYWwiOjAuNn19 on our families iPad 7. Both sites came up without a problem.
I saved a backup then did Flash New Firmware and updated to v2.7.7.
After that, I went to the iPad and tried loading the above sites. The speed site eventually reported: cannot open the page because the network connection is lost. The weather site eventually reported: safari cannot open the page – because not connected to the internet. However, there were a few other links I had on the iPad and I tried a few and they came up.
I saved a backup then restored the previous firmware, v2.7.6. I also loaded the backup that I saved before loading v2.7.7.
I went back to both of the sites above and loaded them fine. Also, during my testing, my granddaughter lost internet access during the time v2.7.7 was loaded and got it back after v2.7.6 was restored.
I understand you just changed the port numbers but my testing shows you hit some hidden bug that does not allow me to use v2.7.7
@WarrenHolt There’s no code that would block cloudflare.com or weather.gov while allowing others (apparently, these sites are not blocked by Access Control either). So we don’t think what you saw was a bug in v2.7.7. On the other hand, if you’re not affected by the bug fixes or updates provided by v2.7.7, there’s no need to upgrade this time.
The two sites I mentioned were in addition to the sites I could not access in my first posting. So at least four sites are unable to be accessed with v2.7.7. I understand that I do not need to update to v2.7.7 at this time but I would then suspect all subsequent releases would also produce the same issues for they will include whatever is in v2.7.7 that makes these sites (and probably more) not work.
Has the build process changed? Have you changed to an updated compiler? Changing code is not the only possibility for this issue.
Still the same for me; 2.7.7 kills my internet connection (WireGuard – Windscribe), when I revert back to 2.7. 6 everything works again.
@j1970m2 Can you send a copy of your backup file to [email protected]? Your VPN credentials will be encrypted in the backup file with a key private to your router so we can’t set up the exact VPN connection you have, but we can take a look at the configurations in general to see if they interfere with VPNs. Thanks!
I also had to revert to 2.7.7. Prior to reverting, this is what I had to do to get 2.7.7 to work, sometimes.
Within an Access Control Profile, change the DNS setting to Google public.
Uncheck Enforce Access Control, Block proxy, Block literal IP addresses, and Block VPN, TOR
Save
Verify internet connectivity and DNS settings at https://www.dnsleaktest.com/ or similar site.
Change DNS setting back to your preferred DNS provider and click save.
Verify internet connectivity and DNS settings at https://www.dnsleaktest.com/ or similar site.
Now, enable Enforce Access Control and discover I cannot connect to the internet. I can ping by name, so DNS in some way is working, but browser content is not working. Follow the steps above to allow internet connectivity again.
Something appears to have changed with what the Enforce Access Control checkbox does.
Ok – I just flashed firmware 2.7.8 and it seems to have corrected all my issues above. It also seems to be quicker to respond and my network speed tests seem faster (though that might just be the day / time). Either way – THANKS!!!
