After doing some research online I concluded I liked Mullvad’s DNS offering. I like the fact I can get a variety of options all without setting up an account. They offer blocking of Ads and trackers; ads, trackers and malware; ads, trackers, malware and social media; or ads, trackers, malware, adult, and gambling. All without requiring an account and configuration. What I want is to block ads, trackers, and malware.

According to their documentation that would be the following server: base.dns.mullvad.net

Their documentation is for various OSes, nit routers, so I had to do some guess work.

I wish I could post screenshots. Here’s my configuration as cut and pasted from the settings/internet page:
    Use broadcast flag
    Enable VLAN Tagging (unchecked)
    Use custom DNS servers (checked)
Enable DNS over HTTPS (DOH) (checked)
Select DOH Server: Add Custom Entry
MullvadAdsTrackerMal (name of my custom config)
    DNS server 1
    194.242.2.4

Here’s what is entered for my custom config:
    Edit DOH Server
    Label:
    MullvadAdsTrackerMal
    IP Address:
    194.242.2.4
    Alternative IP Address:
    <blank>
    URL:
https://base.dns.mullvad.net/dns-query (I added the https:// as shown in the sample configurations from their guided)

Here’s the test results (it does not seem to be working) using Mullvad’s tester (I get the same thing with another tester):

    No DNS leaks

    Your DNS requests originate from:
    IP Address 193.148.18.30
    Server Name us-nyc-dns-601
    Provider M247
    Location New York, NY, USA

I really like the simplicity of the pre-configured DOH servers, but in this case Mullvad seems like a better fit for me. I searched DNS-H and DOH and could not find this addressed in the forums, so here we go.

    Many thanks.

I found an Adguard version that does what I want, so the above question is no mostly rhetorical. Still, I would love to know what I did wrong.

I have completed my sandbox stage and the Newifi D2 is now my gateway router. SO far so good.
