Added google.com as whitelisted site but can't open google apps

I wanted to white list google.com so my kids can do class work on google docs at any time. However this seems to disable the 3×3 grid icon that takes them to the applet with icons for various google apps (drive, sheets etc.). I’m using an Asus ChromeBox. Any tips to work around this?

You need to white list gstatic.com also.
