I notice that there is a check box in the Settings/network VLAN section. While no expert, my understanding was that VLAN required tagging by definition.

So just what difference does checking or unchecking this box do?

On the pcWRT router, VLAN assignments are by port number and WiFi SSID. Under most circumstances there’s no need to tag a port.

You don’t want to tag a port unless the incoming packets on that port carries a VLAN ID. And that would be the case when the port is connected to another router that sends tagged packets.
