After several attempts i found that pcWRT is not compatible with the function “Private DNS” on Android 9. Private DNS has been one of the most important news on Android 9.

I go in phone settings, go on “Private DNS” and set “family-filter-dns.cleanbrowsing.org” The wi-fi does not work.

If i set Private DNS in “Automatic” or “Off” the wi-fi works.

Private DNS is really important, in this way i know that also under mobile data the devices are safe.

P.S. I haven’t tested third party apps to changing dns yet.

I tried a third app to change the dns. With it pcWRT works.

@casino By your comment on Feb 10, I thought this was no longer a problem?

Nope, i wrote that it works with a third app, but it doesn’t work with the “Private DNS” on Android 9, 10 and so on…

Like i written in the first post, try it yourself.

When you manually set Private DNS on the phone, DNS lookup no longer go through the router. For example, if you set your Private DNS to dns.google, then DNS lookup goes over an encrypted TLS connection to dns.google, bypassing the DNS filter on the router. So it is good that traffic is blocked when Private DNS is used.

However, please note that blocking is effective only when “Block proxy, VPN, TOR” is checked on the profile.
