Resetting the router seems to have done the trick. It is updated to v1.22.2 and looks like it works fine.

    Thank you for your help.

p.s. Did you have an announcement of how to use the cloud management feature that I overlooked? I have registered but it isn’t clear how to use this feature. Thanks again

I reset the Arris and waited 2-3 minutes until all usual lights were lit

I then reset the pcwrt. There is no change. The same error messages, same light pattern, same internet page settings, status is still down with no IP address

I could go back to restore faculty default – the modem is only a couple of months old and using screenshots of the current setup reinstall the profiles. The firmware change would not prevent that rolling back to the earlier version, would it?

There is cable from the pcwrt to an Arris modem. At one point several weeks ago I had two routers connected to the modem but it has been 1-2 months since the other router has been turned on or connected to either the modem or pcwrt router.

The internet page has DHCP client as the protocol, hostname is blank, broadcast flag and custon DNS server boxes are not checked, override MAC address is blank, override MTU blank.

In case someone wants to do this or something similar I will say what I did.

Using OpenDNS domain logs I played with the allowing different sites access and included the following sites in my whitelist:
    google.com
    gstatic.com
    googleapis.com
    googleusercontent.com
    youtube.com

The youtube.com is used for music videos. If it is omitted from the whitelist one can still stream audio but not the associated video.

Router doesn’t appear to be working since I updated this firmware this morning. After the update I can see the network name and when I connect I get “No Internet, secured” on my Windows Wi-Fi menu that shows possible wi-fi networks. I have rebooted the router a couple of times but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Have tried different devices as well but still no internet connection. On the pcwrt Status page the Status is “down” and shows local time a Sunday March 19 instead of Tuesday MArch 21. The settings I had prior to the update seem to be in place (parental profiles/calendars).

    Any ideas?

Hi – thanks for your help.

I was interested in setting up two conditions I can schedule for a phone. Under 1 condition the device can access the internet through OpenDNS with restrictions I established for OpenDNS, and under a second condition access the internet without the restrictions I set up using OpenDNS. This could be accomplished easily if I could switch the device between DNS servers (using Google DNS servers for the second condition).

The advantage of using OpenDNS is they already have a built way to block broad categories of content, e.g. gaming, tv, pornography, etc which is far easier than figuring out which individual sites to type into the pcwrt “Blocked URL” boxes.

In general, are there ways to assign two different conditions to a device where both conditions allow some type of access? It seems like with the way profiles are defined the options are condition 1: access with 1 set of restrictions specified in the profile, and condition 2: no access. Is there some way to allow the second condition some type of specified access?

Thanks for giving this some thought.

There are no calendars under the default profile.

The other profile (Called “restricted”) has one calendar. I am interpreting the time blocks (e.g. 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm) to mean hours in which the OpenDNS restrictions are in effect. There are no sites listed on the calendar page although there is one site listed as allowed: gstatic.com.

For devices assigned to the “restricted” profile, what would happen to them outside the 6-9 time block assuming that is the only defined block? Would they have no internet access and be blocked or would they have access according to the default profile or something else?

There is a third profile for a different device that has no calendars and blocks tv, com, net urls. I haven’t checked but I believe it would block the assigned device from urls ending in .tv, .com, or .net around the clock.

    Thanks again

Thank you – this seems to work and address my concerns.

This may be a configuration option you may want to make more well known. When kids have one or two sites parents would like to restrict it is easy enough to enter those domain names in a profile. However, as kids get older and the list of sites and categories grows, it may be easier to have opendns restrict broad categories of sites, say during homework/weekday hours. Just a suggestion.

Now, if you had a product that could get them to complete their homework and chores more carefully…

    Thanks again
