@bjensen2 Your theory is plausible. It might not be a problem with the Arris modem per se, but we’ve observed similar issues with cable ISPs only.
@aaronwilliams You’re right. Port forwarding no longer needed.
@bjensen2 Glad it’s working for you now! People reported some wackiness with Arris cable modems. For example, this: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-Pro-Gaming-Routers/Fix-for-router-constantly-losing-connection-in-bridge-mode/td-p/1641529.
The above is for an Arris router in bridge mode, to which a simple modem is similar.
You are right the MAC address override did not take effect. We’ll look into that.
As the above link also shows, there doesn’t seem to be a clear rule about what MAC address the Arris modem likes. Sometimes, the modem just doesn’t work well with the router. And the technique to fix it is more like hit-and-miss.
@naadhira Spotify needs other domains besides spotify.com to function. Check the Internet log to see which spotify related domains are blocked and add the needed domains to the calendar.
@casino Your black/white list is too long for the router to process in time. The router was still processing the list while the browser timed out. That’s why you get “bad gateway”. We’ll make improvement to this page in a future release. But for now, you need to make your list shorter.
Generally speaking, the black list & white list you enter in the profiles are for exception handling. They are not expected to be big lists. The majority of the filtering should be done by the DNS service you choose. If you get a list from the web, a lot of the entries might be filtered by the DNS service already.
Additionally, you can use the “approximate” match to make your black/white list shorter. Here are some examples:
And, you can use port ranges instead of listing individual ports, e.g., “:6660-7000T” blocks all TCP ports from 6660 to 7000.
@knoxploration Thanks for the feedback. The display bug had been fixed. The problem with remotely upgrading firmware is, you don’t have any options to recover if something goes wrong. As a precautionary measure we don’t support remote upgrade.
@casino Let’s assume that www.my-cable-modem.net resolves to IP address 192.168.100.1. If you put 192.168.100.1 in the black list, then http://192.168.100.1 is blocked. However, http://www.my-cable-modem.net is not blocked. That’s the way it should work because multiple web sites may be hosted on the same IP address and you only want to block the domains listed in the black list.
There may be occasions you want to block an IP address, no matter what name is used to access it. That’s when you want to use the forced block syntax: “192.168.100.1!”. When an exclamation mark is appended to the end of the IP address, all domains that resolve to the IP address are also blocked (e.g., www.my-cable-modem.net).
Additionally, without “Enforce Access Control”, a user can bypass blacklisting & safe search by overriding DNS servers on the user device. With “Enforce Access Control”, DNS override is blocked.
Also, the router logs Internet activity only when “Enforce Access Control” is enabled.
Glad you have the problem resolved! Usually, restore backup should not be a problem, unless the backup is really old. The rule of thumb is, you should create a new backup and discard any old backups each time after a new firmware update. Well, maybe keep the previous backup too in case you want to roll back to the previous version.
Do you mean you can’t assign this PC to a profile? You got “Bad Gateway” after clicking Save? Is the profile created if you reload the Access Control page after you see the Bad Gateway message?
Can you try cloning the MAC address off of the gigabit switch and set it as the MAC address for the pcWRT router WAN connection? I.e., Override MAC address on the Internet Settings page.
It looks like your login id has three l’s, but your Cloud page user id only had 2 l’s.
The USB port is not enabled on the router.
