• The cybersecurity industry is a billion dollar scam?

    Hacking

An article on TNW claimed that the cybersecurity industry is a billion dollar scam. Now that’s something new. Something I’ve never thought of. Something sensational.

But to call a whole industry scam you have to back your claim with substance. The fact that the security industry exists because of increasing security threats does not make it a scam. The fact that the security industry is broken does not make it a scam. To follow the article’s analogy, the fact that “cops” make a living because of the existence of “robbers” does not mean that “cops” are in an “unholy alliance” with “robbers”. However, those are the only materials brought up by the author to back his claim.

Plus a short plug at the very end of the story. The author pointed out a “better way”, which happens to be what his company is offering.

Fair competition based on merits is good. Painting the competitor as the “big bad wolf” to gain an edge is lame. Painting the competitor as the “big bad wolf” with broken logic is lamer. Reading the comments following the article, it seems that the readers of TNW didn’t buy it either.
